A North Sea operator required an environmentally-conscious method of well plug and
abandonment for two wells. James Fisher responded to the challenge with the first
commercial deployment of SEABASS™.
Customer challenge
The customer required a safe, cost-effective and environmentally-conscious decommissioning in line with industry best practice. To address this, James Fisher deployed the modular SEABASS™ system and handled full project management throughout subsea well abandonment.
Solution for our customer
James Fisher designed, engineered and delivered a reliable, single-trip solution to safely abandon AB2 status wells. The team drifted and scraped the well, pressure tested the system and perforated the 13-2/8" casing. Oil-based mud (OBM) was flushed, and fluid returns were managed before a 300ft environmental cement barrier was placed.
Customer impact
- Supported responsible decommissioning by removing OBM and other contaminants from casing annulus before environmental barrier application
- Effective back deck fluid management using filtration package avoided additional expense of port calls to empty storage tanks and dispose of contaminated fluids
- Inaugural project delivered successfully due to experienced decommissioning project personnel and robust methodology.
