James Fisher supported a pioneering ammonia bunkering pilot in Rotterdam, Netherlands, helping validate safe, large-scale ship-to-ship (STS) transfer of alternative fuel.
Challenge
The Port of Rotterdam is advancing infrastructure and safety frameworks for alternative fuels. The pilot needed to demonstrate that large-scale STS ammonia transfers could be completed safely and efficiently, supporting the development of ammonia as a scalable bunker fuel.
Solution
James Fisher supported the STS transfer of approximately 1,000m³ of liquid ammonia at -33°C, using specialised equipment including powered emergency release couplings and composite hoses to mitigate risk and enable safe, efficient operational delivery.
Key features
Customer impact
- Validated the Port of Rotterdam’s ammonia bunkering safety framework
- Achieved Port Readiness Level 7
- Demonstrated safe, large-scale ammonia STS transfer in a major global port
- Supported progress towards scalable alternative-fuel bunkering
- Reinforced James Fisher Fendercare’s position in complex STS operations
- Supports strategic growth in solutions enabling the maritime energy transition
