Overview
JFD is delivering a next-generation Submarine Rescue Vehicle (SRV) for installation aboard the Republic of Korea Navy’s new rescue vessel, ASR-II, built by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., Ltd. (DSME). This SRV is uniquely designed for moonpool launch and recovery, offering high-capability rescue at depth with enhanced transfer-to-hyperbaric functionality.
This programme marks a significant milestone in Korea’s submarine rescue capability, combining cutting-edge engineering, rigorous testing, and international collaboration.
Challenge
The Republic of Korea Navy required a bespoke SRV that could integrate with ASR-II’s novel moonpool launch system, rather than a traditional Launch and Recovery System (LARS). This required a highly specialised solution, capable of rescuing multiple personnel at depth, and transferring them safely to a hyperbaric environment under pressure.
Solution
JFD developed a third-generation, free-swimming SRV with the following features:
- Capacity: 17 rescuees + 3 crew
- Depth rating: 500msw
- Displacement: 32 tonnes
- Hyperbaric transfer: Capable of transferring rescuees at up to 5 bar pressure
- Classed by: Lloyd’s Register
- Construction: High-fidelity SSAB Strenx and Super Duplex Pressure Hull
- Navigation: Integrated with MOSHIP advanced tracking and navigation systems
- Deployment method: Moonpool launch and recovery
JFD also built and delivered a full-scale mock-up SRV, used by DSME to test and de-risk the launch cradle and hyperbaric sub-systems during construction of ASR-II.
Value to Customer
- Fully customised SRV designed to integrate with Korea’s new moonpool system
- Risk reduction through full-scale mock-up testing during ship build
- Deep operational capability and hyperbaric safety built into the rescue process
- Long-term technical collaboration between JFD, DSME, and subcontractors
- Delivery ahead of sea trials and commissioning timeline
