JFD is the recognised world leader in the provision of submarine rescue and support services and supports some of the most advanced navies in the world.

When minutes matter, readiness matters.

Submarine rescue is one of the most complex operations in maritime defence, where limited oxygen, rising CO₂ and extreme conditions can quickly narrow the window for a successful outcome.

We deliver innovative, technically advanced submarine escape and rescue solutions across the full life cycle from design and manufacture to integration, operation, training, and in‑service support, helping navies plan and execute rescues with confidence.

With first-hand experience supporting real-world emergency responses and operating within international rescue frameworks, we help ensure the right systems, people and processes are in place to protect submariners worldwide.

Submarine rescue systems

JFD’s rescue systems capability spans end-to-end delivery designing, building, integrating and sustaining submarine rescue solutions built for rapid mobilisation and demanding operating environments.

From proven in-service systems through to next-generation capability development, JFD supports customers with solutions that are aligned to operational needs and can be maintained and assured through life.

  • End-to-end capability: design, manufacture, integration, installation, operation, maintenance, training and in-service support.
  • Proven system pedigree across multiple national and multinational rescue programmes (e.g., NSRS, ISRS, and other national systems).
  • System design focused on rapid and flexible mobilisation (e.g., newer-generation “Agile” rescue system approach).

Readiness assurance & rapid mobilisation planning

A rescue system is only as effective as the mobilisation chain behind it. JFD helps navies reduce risk to Time to First Rescue (TTFR) by proactively checking the readiness of airports and mobilisation ports (MOPORTs), identifying constraints before an emergency callout occurs.

This is complemented by services that strengthen compatibility and deployment confidence across international rescue frameworks — including rescue seat certification to current NATO standards and rapid identification of suitable vessels of opportunity to host mobilisation assets

  • Airport & MOPORT assurance: proactive readiness assessments covering infrastructure, logistics and constraints that can delay mobilisation.
  • Rescue seat certification: verification against ANEP/MNEP 85/85.1, including surveys, data packages and compatibility assurance.
  • Vessel of opportunity (VOO) database: continuously updated global tracking to rapidly identify suitable MOSHIP candidates (incl. technical details like deck area, cranes and DP), with 5,000+ vessels actively tracked

Submarine rescue services, training & SMERAS support

JFD provides integrated rescue services and training designed to improve operational readiness supporting navies with specialist capability that can be activated quickly and executed safely under pressure.

For broader submarine escape, rescue, abandonment and survival (SMERAS) needs, JFD can support equipment provision, training, operational support, personnel resourcing and through-life services — including policy/capability reviews and inspections — helping both established and emerging submarine nations build a robust response framework.

  • Rescue and defence training services aligned to critical response scenarios.
  • SMERAS support across studies, designs, equipment, training, facilities, personnel resourcing and integrated logistics support.
  • Benchmarking and review options (e.g., capability reviews and inspections) to identify gaps and strengthen readiness.
