Overview
JFD designed, built, and delivered two complete Third Generation Submarine Rescue Systems for the Indian Navy (RSN) in record time, with the first system delivered within 23 months of contract award and the second just 8 months later. These modular, air-transportable systems provide deep-sea rescue and advanced hyperbaric treatment capabilities, supporting the Indian Navy’s commitment to submarine crew safety.
Maintained ashore at two coastal locations; Mumbai (West) and Visakhapatnam (East)—the systems can be rapidly mobilised to vessels of opportunity when required, ensuring flexible, high-readiness support across India’s maritime domain.
Challenge
India required a scalable, containerised submarine rescue capability that could be rapidly deployed, operate at extreme depths, and provide vertical Transfer Under Pressure (TUP) to a hyperbaric environment—while also meeting strict safety, alignment, and operational demands in varying deployment scenarios.
Solution
JFD delivered two fully containerised, portable, third-generation rescue systems designed for rapid global deployment and integration. Each system includes:
- Submarine Rescue Vehicle (SRV) rated to 650m, with 293kWh LiPo battery system
- 90-person hyperbaric treatment facility, delivered through three triple-lock chambers
- 14-person rescue capacity per dive
- Revolutionary Transfer Under Pressure system using a mating skirt for safe, efficient alignment
- LARS with integrated DDC chambers for simplified deck alignment
- ROV with Launch and Recovery System & Emergency Life Support Stores delivery
- Side Scan Sonar for submarine localisation
- Mechanical, electrical & life support containers
- Three generators (2 for rescue, 1 for intervention)
- Shallow and deep mating targets
- Air loading equipment compatible with India Air Force IL76 aircraft
All systems are designed in accordance with Lloyd’s Register rules, and JFD has committed to a 27-year support and maintenance contract, including continuous crew training and lifecycle management.
