Since 2009, JFD has proudly supported the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) with a fully integrated submarine rescue capability from its base in Bibra Lake, Australia. Operating under a Contractor Owned / Contractor Operated (COCO) model, JFD ensures a robust, ready-to-deploy solution that safeguards the lives of submariners in distress.
JFD’s extensive track record with the RAN exemplifies its leadership in the SMERAS (Submarine Escape, Rescue, Abandonment and Survival) domain.
Challenge
Australia required a proven and rapidly deployable rescue solution capable of operating across a vast maritime domain. The system had to ensure high readiness, rapid mobilisation, and complete integration with RAN procedures—all while meeting stringent regulatory standards.
Solution
JFD delivered a Fly-Away Submarine Rescue System incorporating:
- Submarine Rescue Vehicle (LR5): 400m depth, 16-person rescue capacity
- Portable Handling System
- Integrated Hyperbaric Suite: 88-person capacity
- Scorpio SC45 ROV
- Side Scan Sonar (Towed Array)
- SQEP-certified operators and maintainers
JFD also provides full training, testing and operational support, including:
- Annual Black Carillon major capability exercises
- 1–2 SRV Operational Training Activities (OTAs) per year
- 1–2 ROV OTAs annually
- Frequent aircraft loading trials and system demonstrations
