Kickstart your career in the Merchant Navy with James Fisher; gaining all the skills, knowledge and behaviours over a 3-year adventure to become a fully trained Officer of the Watch with internationally recognised qualifications.

As ship owners and operators for more than 175 years, James Fisher has unparalleled experience in supporting our cadets to achieve their goals.  

When you complete your cadetship through James Fisher, you’ll benefit from: 

  • Bursary of £8,500 in Year 1, and £10,500 in Years 2 and 3 respectively  
  • College halls of residency fully paid for, including breakfast and evening meal provision in the on-site canteen 
  • A fully funded course, with your first exam attempt fees covered 
  • All required uniform and PPE provided 
  • Any necessary travel to and from college at the start and end of term is provided, as well as travel to and from our vessels during your sea phases 
  • All meals and sustenance throughout the sea phases is provided for you on board our vessels.  

Complete your Officer of the Watch training with James Fisher 

Successful applications will obtain an Officer of the Watch (OOW) certificate of competency in Deck or Engineering, and a formal qualification to at least an Advanced Certification (AdC, formally the HNC programme).  

To apply for our cadetship, you must be at least 17 when you apply, and 18 at the time of going to sea. You also need to have four GCSEs (or, Scottish equivalent), including Maths, English and Science at grades four to nine (new) or A-C (old). For applicants who studies the Scottish equivalent, you must hold qualifications in English, Maths and Science in grades one to four.  

To join the Deck or Engineering OOW Degree Programme, you should possess at least the grades listed above, with the addition of at least a grade five (new) or B (old) in GCSE Mathematics, or Scottish equivalent, and a minimum of 60 UCAS points at A or AS level, including subjects which support your application.
