Join James Fisher as an apprentice and kickstart your career! Work alongside experienced professionals in maritime operations and engineering, becoming a vital part of our dynamic team. You’re not just an apprentice; you’re a valued member of a global team dedicated to innovation.

As an apprentice, you’ll receive support from both a line manager and a mentor, ensuring you make the most of your experience. You’ll also collaborate with a training provider to develop the skills and knowledge needed to excel in your field.

Our engineering and technical apprenticeships provide a gateway to innovation and hands-on learning. We offer apprenticeships from Level 2 to Level 6 (equivalent to SCQF levels in Scotland), empowering you to shape your future as the next technical expert in our field.

Our business apprenticeships offer aspiring professionals invaluable real-world experience in a dynamic global environment. You’ll have the opportunity to work within our key departments such as operations, Finance, Human Resources, Marketing, IT, Logistics and Project Management. 

Gain experience and qualifications with James Fisher’s Officer Training and Cadet Scheme

Embark on a rewarding career with James Fisher's Officer Trainee Sponsorship and Cadet Training Scheme. This three-year programme is divided into five phases, combining college-based studies and hands-on sea experience.

  • Phases 1, 3, and 5: College-based learning.
  • Phases 2 and 4: Sea-based training onboard our tankers, each trip lasting approximately two months. You'll have a designated mentor and full PPE provided.

Our fleet operates along the UK and Northern European coastline, with occasional voyages to the Caribbean!

Program Highlights:

  • Achieve an Officer of the Watch (OOW) certificate of competency in deck or engineering.
  • Work towards a formal qualification: L3 (equivalent to HND) and BSc in Natural Science or L3 (equivalent to HND) and BEng in Marine Engineering

Eligibility:

  • Age 18+ (by the time first sea phase comes round)
  • Five GCSEs (or Scottish equivalent) including Maths, English, and Science at grades 4-9 (new) or A-C (old).
  • For the deck or engineering OOW foundation degree: Minimum grade 5 (new) or B (old) in GCSE Mathematics and at least 48 UCAS points in Maths/Science-related subjects.

Cadet Training Benefits

  • Bursary of £8,500 in Year 1 and £10,500 in Years 2 and 3
  • College accommodation covered for phase 1, including breakfast and dinner
  • Accommodation for other non-sea phases is arranged by cadets and covered by us
  • Full funding for course fees and first exam attempt
  • Uniform and PPE provided
  • Travel expenses covered for college at the start and end of each term
  • Travel to and from our vessels, with meals provided during sea phases

Course start dates occur annually in February and September.

As a Deck Officer Cadet, you’ll play a crucial role in ensuring the safe navigation of our vessel, both in open waters and during complex port manoeuvres. Your responsibilities will include overseeing tanker operations, managing deck maintenance, and participating in mooring, anchoring, and safety drills. You will work as part of a diverse, multinational team, contributing to the smooth and secure operation of our ship.

As an Engineer Cadet, you’ll be responsible for operating and maintaining the ship’s engine room and its advanced equipment. This includes managing the main engine, boilers, pumps, fuel systems, electrical generating and distribution equipment, refrigeration and air conditioning plants, lifts, cranes, and all other mechanical and electrical systems. You’ll ensure the smooth and efficient functioning of these systems, contributing to the overall safety and performance of the vessel.
