Overview
James Fisher was engaged to design a structural health monitoring (SHM) solution for the Cebu Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX) in Metro Cebu, Philippines, where its international capability, expertise in cable-stayed bridge monitoring, and Smart Asset Management Software (SAMS™) helped to ensure safe operation of the bridge during construction and throughout full lifecycle of the structure.
The Challenge
James Fisher was required to provide an advanced SHM system to support the safe and efficient construction of the CCLEX project, a major infrastructure development in the Philippines. To meet a targeted completion date of 2021, the monitoring solution would need to integrate with an existing supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system, and offer real-time data insights to help ensure safety throughout the construction phase. A team of field engineers was established in the Philippines as a local presence to provide direct communication with the CCLEX team.
Damian Griffiths, General ManagerIt is great to see our success in the UK and Europe being mirrored overseas as we continue to secure contracts for large SHM projects on iconic structures. The CCLEX is a huge project in the region and we are excited to have the opportunity to have our system support both the construction phase and full life cycle of the bridge. This is another example of how we can deliver projects across the world utilising offices in the Middle East, UK and Malaysia.
Our Solution
The team developed a custom-made software solution to enable its latest SAMS™ system to integrate seamlessly into CCLEX existing SCADA system. The SAMS™ system would provide real-time data on the bridge’s structural health, helping to ensure a safe working environment. To manage costs and lead times the company operated from its regional facility in Kuala Lumpur, enabling responsive support to customers in the Asia-Pacific region. Installation began in August 2020.
Value to customer
- SAMS™ enables the CCLEX project team to operate a data-driven maintenance strategy, significantly reducing long-term costs and extending asset life.
- Real-time insights into the bridge's structural health helps to ensure that the bridge remains safe throughout all stages of construction and beyond.
- The remote monitoring solution allows for reduced on-site personnel, mitigating risk during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Local presence in the Philippines ensured the project progressed smoothly without delays.
