‘Primary Engineer’ inspires schools

One of JFD’s senior engineers has been visiting schools in Scotland to show children some of the team’s development work with submarine rescue systems.

Over the last 12 months JFD senior mechanical engineer, Harmeet Saggu has been giving presentations to Bearsden Primary School and The High School of Glasgow Junior School showing off JFD’s innovative new 3rd generation submarine rescue system and giving regular updates as the team worked on its development and progress.

His visits come as part of a national ‘Primary Engineer’ initiative designed to deliver engineering teacher training and inspirational classroom projects to schools all over the UK.

Harmeet says:

‘School children see other professions around them all the time but not many associate a job like engineering with something as exciting as a submarine rescue system. So it’s great to be able to showcase what we engineers do at JFD – particularly as some of it is stuff they didn’t even know existed!

It is very rewarding to be able to give the children and teachers a real insight into how truly diverse the engineering role can be.’

Primary Engineer was set up in 2005 to bring engineers into the classroom to work alongside teachers and pupils to inspire children and feed teachers new ideas which translate directly to the working world.

Lise McCaffery, regional director for Primary Engineer adds:

‘It is great to have an engineer to provide context to the learning for the pupils and they loved hearing directly from and working with Harmeet.’
