Sensing a sea-change in offshore energy

Strainstall joins pilot project for the world's first floating offshore wind turbine.

Strainstall sensors are being used to help assess the realistic long-term feasibility of a revolutionary new floating wind farm concept 25-30Km off the coast of Aberdeen in Scotland. The wind farm, called Hywind, is being built by Norwegian state-owned oil company Statoil.

As the world leader in mooring monitoring for offshore oil and gas tension leg platforms, Strainstall was ideally placed to transfer its considerable knowledge into the growing offshore renewable industry.

Hywind is a prototype project of five 6mw floating turbines which will be tethered by chains to the seabed 100m below, and Strainstall sensors will be installed into the chain stoppers which lock the chains in place on the hull of the turbine.

Until now, offshore wind farms have been constructed on to the seabed, a design which is limited by sea depth and the distance from shore, but this project will be the first time a deep sea wind farm has been trialled. As an experiment project, Strainstall has been selected to help closely monitor how the mooring lines react so far out to sea.

"These sensors are extremely accurate and can sense minute changes in tension. This will provide a large amount of data which will help Statoil understand the loads and expected fatigue life of the structure."

Says Strainstall's marine systems engineer, Frank Rose.

Strainstall sensors will play an integral role in gathering data which will inform and improve the design of future constructions.
