Enterprising students win maritime challenge

James Fisher boosts awareness of maritime careers for young people with exciting educational initiative.

James Fisher has been working closely with schools in the Furness area on an exciting new educational initiative to boost awareness of maritime careers for young people.

'My School is an Island'

As part of an exciting annual competition called 'My School is an Island', individuals from James Fisher have been called upon to act as mentors, offering advice and guidance to school children living in the maritime areas in which they work.

The teams of children, aged 12-13, chosen from schools across the country were challenged to produce a series of work assignments based on the premise that their school was on an island site offshore. The 10-week challenge saw them complete projects tackling some of the logistical and environmental difficulties that an island-based school might encounter.

The annual project is designed to enable students in maritime areas to find out about local industries and to see how their science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) lessons at school might equip them for exciting careers in the marine sector. Nine schools in the Cumbria area entered.

James Fisher mentors

Richard Cartwright, QSE superintendent at James Fisher Shipping Services and James Fisher's regional HR manager, Paula Hogan, were given the task of mentoring Millom School near the company's head office Barrow-in-Furness and were thrilled when the school went on to win the 2016 event.

Amy Hodgson, who was at the time James Fisher's HR advisor, mentored St Bernard's School in Barrow; and Danielle Le Breton, group head of HR, also helped as an assessor at the final celebration and assessment day. Danielle says;

"This project is a great example of how James Fisher is contributing to supporting education and awareness of the marine sector in the local area."

Paula added;

"This excellent project offered James Fisher the opportunity to be more actively involved in the community and to work with the talent of the future - it was hugely rewarding and a great learning experience for everyone involved!"
