Job Purpose
The Engineering Manager has similar responsibilities to a Design Manager, but with addition of responsibility for all the staff within a site’s engineering office and hence a significantly larger and multidiscipline team.

The Engineering Manager is responsible for managing these resources in the best way to ensure successful technical delivery of projects as required by our clients. The Engineering Manager works closely with both the Project Managers and the other departments to ensure a successful overall project delivery.

The Engineering Manager works across the following key areas:

  • Line Management and General Responsibilities 

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Engineering Productivity & Quality

  • Overall management of the site’s engineering resource
  • Accountability to ensure that all projects delivered on their site are well engineered and delivered to the customer on time and within budget
  • Ensuring JFN engineering processes and procedures are followed to maintain consistency and quality of engineering work
  • Maintain a close working relationship with other departments, especially Procurement and Manufacturing to ensure engineering activities work smoothly in the delivery of projects
  • Communicating and maintaining focus on key targets such as budgets and milestones to the engineering team
  • Ensuring compliance with both client and statutory requirements 

Developing Employees

  • Ongoing assessment of the balance of skills within the engineering team to ensure successful projects can be delivered
  • Implementing JFN policies on investing in and developing people
  • Working with HR and other internal stakeholders to recruit new employees
  • Ensuring engineering staff have appropriate equipment and IT support to perform their duties
  • Conducting formal performance appraisals with direct reports
  • Regular contact with staff to ensure their professional and personal development is on track
  • Developing a supportive, encouraging and learning environment for engineering and support staff
  • Developing, communicating and supporting training programmes and initiatives (externally and internally) to up-skill staff

Tendering Tasks
This may include but not be limited to;

  • Production of concept designs
  • Estimating durations for design of tender items
  • Composing technical responses to quotation requests

Continual Improvement

  • Ongoing assessment of engineering processes and procedures to identify and implement improvements
  • Implementation of continual improvement initiatives such as visual management tools and ‘toolbox’ talks

Line Management / General

  • Dealing with daily staff matters including attendance, leave, sickness
  • Involvement where required in pay reviews and grievances
  • Communicating and upholding company procedures and values, such as Health & Safety, Quality and Environmental
  • Has been accountable for a variety of diverse projects or activities ranging in both size and complexity.
  • Experience in a senior role with a line management capacity
  • Proven organisational, administrative, and planning abilities
  • Commercially and delivery-focused
  • High level written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent people skills, especially in supporting and motivating staff and in developing the abilities of others
  • Experience or familiarity continual improvement methodologies

Qualifications

  • Degree in an engineering discipline (or HND)
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng)
